Starting A Diet In The Middle Of The Day

So it’s the middle of the afternoon and my eating hasn’t been the greatest today. I’ve had my kids home from college and travels and I’ve gotten into their foods a little more than I should. The day isn’t a total disaster, but I could be going better.

My first response is to wait until tomorrow and try to get back on track.

Or, I could start now. Right in the middle of the day.

And that’s what I’m doing. I’m pulling out my meal tracker and I’m going to be accountable for the rest of today. I’m planning on a nice homemade dinner of Thai Peanut Noodles and Chicken. And I’m not planning on blowing it with any more sweets or anything extra after dinner. I’m brushing my teeth and calling it a day.

I don’t like the word “diet,” but the truth is, for me, the opposite of diet is “eat whatever you want” and that’s why I’m overweight. A diet doesn’t mean starving myself or cutting out any particular foods. It just means eating moderately, and only at mealtimes.

My diet, or eating plan as I usually say, consists of Breakfast, Lunch, Snack and Dinner. When I get off track, like today, I tend to graze all day. I don’t really binge. I just eat too often. And often I’m not even hungry. Someone pulls out a bag of cookies and my hand is in it. Someone suggests stopping for some fries, and I’m like, “sure!” It’s like I don’t even think about what I’m eating.

It may seem hard for someone with a lot of discipline to believe, but that’s where I’m at most times. And my eating plan is my way back to healthy, disciplined eating.

Maybe you can relate. If you’re struggling with this today, or any day, you don’t have to wait until a new day to get your eating under control. Whether you’ve strayed from your original eating plan or are ready to start a new one, you can start any time of day.

As for me, I’ve got my lined piece of notebook paper and pen ready to steer me back on track. And even though the day is half over, I’m going to finish it healthy. I’m back on track right now. Right in the middle of the day.
